Summer car season is winding down, the holidays are dead ahead, and Sacramento's first real rain of the year is coming — which means accident season is about to pick up before most drivers even notice the forecast changed. Here's what's on our radar this month, from the shop and from the neighborhood.
Ready or not, here comes the rain.
Every September we say the same thing to each other in the shop: enjoy the dry pavement while it lasts. Sacramento goes months without real rain, and the first storm of the season always catches people off guard — not because they're bad drivers, but because months of oil and grime built up on the road turns into the slickest driving surface of the entire year the moment it gets wet.
We see it every fall. A run of fender-benders in the first week of real rain, almost always in the same handful of spots around town. So this issue leads with that, plus a quick five-point check you can do yourself before the weather turns. Why the first rain causes more accidents than the storms after it.
It sounds backwards — shouldn't the biggest storm of the year be the most dangerous? In Sacramento, it's usually the opposite. Months of dry weather let oil, rubber, and grime build up on the asphalt. The first rain lifts all of it to the surface before it has a chance to wash away, turning ordinary roads into something closer to a skating rink for the first hour or two of rainfall. Add in drivers who haven't touched their wipers or checked their tread since spring, and you've got the most predictable accident spike of the year.
The first rain after a long dry spell lifts oil, rubber, and road grime to the surface before it washes away, making roads significantly slicker than during later storms. Combined with worn tire tread and wiper blades that haven't been checked since spring, this creates the most accident-prone driving conditions of the entire year — typically within the first hour or two of rainfall.
You don't need to overhaul anything to be ready for it. You need about ten minutes and the checklist below.

Do this before the next storm, not during it.

Tire Tread
Run a penny test on all four tires. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, it's time to talk about replacement before the wet roads arrive, not after.

Wiper Blades
If they're streaking, skipping, or squeaking on your windshield now, they'll be useless in a downpour. Most blades only last about a year in Sacramento's sun.

Headlights & Taillights
Fall means shorter days and more low-visibility driving. Check that every bulb works, and consider a headlight restoration if yours have gone cloudy over the summer.

Brakes
Wet roads mean longer stopping distances even with good brakes. Any squeal, grind, or soft pedal feel is worth checking now, while it's a scheduled visit instead of an emergency one.

Battery
Summer heat is hard on batteries, and a lot of them fail in fall without warning. A quick load test takes minutes and beats getting stranded on a rainy morning.

Fall driving questions we're getting this month.
Why does the first rain of the season feel more dangerous than heavier storms later?
Because months of dry weather let oil and grime build up on the road surface. The first rain lifts that buildup before it washes away, making roads unusually slick for the first hour or two — later storms hit roads that have already been rinsed clean.
How do I know if my tires are ready for wet roads?
Run the penny test: insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln's head pointing down. If you can see all of his head, your tread is too worn for reliable wet-weather traction and it's time to consider replacement.
Is Rippers open during Farm-to-Fork weekend?
Yes — our regular hours apply. Just plan for extra time getting across the bridge if you're headed downtown that weekend.
How often should I get my brakes checked before winter?
If it's been more than a year, or if you're hearing any squeal, grind, or noticing a soft pedal, get them checked now. Wet roads increase stopping distances even on healthy brakes, so fall is the right time to catch small issues before they're winter emergencies.
